APPRENTICESHIPS
Many industries employ apprentices, in some industries it is easier to get an apprenticeship than others. There are skilled worker shortages in the following industries:
Cabinet Making, Shopfitting, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrotechnology, Sheet Metal Trades, Tiling, Plastering, Bricklaying, Panel Beating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics, Diesal Mechanic and Motorcycle Mechanic.
Many trades welcome women to train as apprentices.
There are a number of ways to get an apprenticeship:
1. If family and friends work in the industry ask them if they know of anyone who might employ an apprentice.
2. Do a Pre Employment course at TAFE (see Ms Hawryluk or Ms Davies in the Careers Room for updated TAFE course information).
3. Look in the phone book or on the internet to find employers in the local area who might be able to employ you as an apprentice. Ask if you can meet with them and give them your resume.
4. Check on websites such as Ausgrid for electrical apprenticeships, local councils also have yearly intakes of different apprenticeships.
5. Get your P driver's license as soon as you can.
6. Contact a group training or apprenticeship organisation
