How Do I Get a Carpentry Apprenticeship ?
Carpentry is an area where there are shortages of skilled workers. Carpenters construct and repair wooden and metal structures on buildings. They may also work on large concrete, steel and timber structures such as bridges, dams and power stations.
There a few ways to become a Carpenter, all Carpenters need to complete an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship usually takes 4 years. During this time the apprentice works for a business owner four days per week and attends TAFE one day per week.
The best ways to get an apprenticeship are:
1. Ask family and friends if they know of any carpenters who are looking for apprentices.
2. Enrol in a Pre Employment Carpentry course at TAFE. You must go to the information sessions when they are advertised. At these sessions you will be given a literacy and numeracy test and also you will have an interview with the head teacher.
